Is there any suggestions or direction I should considering going to better help my daughter?. ?

Hi,

My daughter is now 10 years old, had her first seizure at 9 months, was developing at a moderate rate was on several anti convulsion drugs Tegretol, Dilantin, Topax and depekene, at 21/2 years MRI revealed Atrophy of the brain, has not spoke a word since then, just makes a lot of nonsensical noises .

She is fully potty trained, cognitively she is not totally there but has been trying to communicate, this is really difficult and has not responded to sign language, is currently at a special needs school, who has been work with her as best as they could, but really feel that a lot more could be done for her.

Is there any suggestions or direction I should considering going to better help my daughter?.

Hi,
I want to be very careful as I answer your question. You wrote "cognitively she is not totally there". That suggests that your daughter does not understand things like a 10 year old. Take a moment to review your daughter's evaluations that were done at the school. There should be a section that tells you her level of functioning and understanding. If the testing suggests that she understands things like a 5 year old, she should be taught and instructed as if she were 5. If the testing suggests that she understands things like a 2 year old, then she should be instructed and taught as if she were 2. I would suggest that your family and the education team take a serious look at what your daughter is able to understand and build from there. In order to be able to sign, she must (at minimal)be able to imitate. Watch and do. The signs do not have to be perfect, but intentional. She must be able to pay attention long enough to watch someone sign; imitate the sign and then receive the "reward". Usually the reward is food, toys, etc. Good luck!! You are a very caring mother.
