My 4 year son has a receptive/expressive language delay and is scheduled for a speech therapy. My question is this, how is a speech therapy done in this age and how effective is a speech therapy?

More information is needed about how your son communicates and what he understands. How does he tell you what he wants? Does he follow directions that are spoken to him? Is his speech easy to understand when he talks to people that do not know him? How delayed is his expressive language? How delayed is his receptive language?

It has been my experience that speech therapy techniques work best if a home program is developed that reinforces the goals set by the therapist. It gives the children more opportunities to practice the new strategies and to understand that they are expected to do things the new way all of the time.
