Speech & language delay in special ed preschool classroom?

My son has turned 3 years old in August, and we had him screened for speech delay because we realized he was not talking as much and as correct as other children his age. We started him in a full time pre-school program in a private school two months ago. He had the screening two weeks ago and the school district want to place him in a public school special ed classroom. The private preschool that he goes to now does not offer any type of specialized services for preschoolers. When he was screened, they also tested him for other delays or developmental issues, but he passed all except for the language and speech. His main problem is that he cannot pronounce words correctly, and certain letters in the middle of a word l,m,d,n,t, and he also does not speak too well in sentences. I DID see improvement since he started preschool, but he is still not at the same level as the other kids. We speak two languages in the home, so I am thinking that might have something to do with it also. But he is improving each day, slowly.
My question is, should I take him to the special ed classroom in the public school? I really hope that it will not negatively affect him, being around other kids with different needs. I don't mean to offend anyone, but this is my main concern, him being around children with other disorders that might affect him. I might be worng, so that is why I am asking this question here, please let me know your input. Should I keep taking him to the private preschool (full time), take him to the public(3 hrsx4days/week) or try to take him to both and incorporate the public into private and see how that works?
Thank you!!!

my suggestion is take your child to school. Evening times consult with speech therapist and start doing excercizes. it may be opening the mouth widely, chewing moments of mouth, rotating tongue 360 degrees etc. check your child is having any tongue tie. if it is there minor surgery can help to avoid tongue tie.

Not having observed your son personally I can't know for sure of course, but I would suggest keeping him in the classroom he is in for at least this school year. The speech issues he is experiencing are actually pretty common in children his age, and since he has no other delays, I would think that being in an environment where other children and adults are modeling correct pronunciation and language use would be the best environment for him. In a special ed classroom, he may be in an environment where he may actually be hearing less correct language use which may make it difficult for him to pick up on appropriate language use. At 3, he is still a bit young for speech therapy and I would think that a year of hearing correct language use would be the best thing for him. Why don't you just give it a year and then see how he's doing and take it from there. And I don't think 2 languages at home should be a problem. Just don't mix the two together. If you are having a conversation in English, keep it all in English. If you are having a conversation in your other language, keep it all in that language.

The school district program is specifically designed to meet his needs. You say his current preschool does nothing for him. Of course you should take advantage of the district program!
He won't be "negatively" affected by kids with different needs! You may learn something by the experience too. Like not to be concerned when he is around children with "disorders." What sort of disorders do you expect the district preschool to address? Blind children? Deaf children? Children in wheelchairs? How will this cause any negativity? He will learn others are different, which is good!

My son went to public preschool for a speech problem, starting when he was 3. All the kids in his class had speech problems, some due to ear infections, some for a physical problem forming words, my son for who knows what. The point is, they didn't throw him in with blind kids, or kids with cerebral palsy. He was with the kids that needed speech therapy! He thought it was a regular preschool until years later! They did regular preschool things. They did fun crafts, played outside. They also did speech related exercises, like blowing cotton balls across the table to each other, ala ping-pong. He went from me, his mom, not understanding him, to perfect speech within a few years.

The teachers are trained speech therapists. This is what your son needs! A friend had a daughter who talked about like my son. When the school suggested speech therapy she pulled her daughter out and never went back, saying she would grow out of it on her own. She didn't. The last time I heard her talk (They moved) she was in middle school and still had a speech impediment.
I have other friends who speak several languages in the home, and the children learn both, no confusion or pronunciation problems. It is suggested that families who speak more than one language have one parent use one language with the child, the other parent the other. They learn both.

It is appalling that you feel your son would be scarred or something by contact with disabled children. You need to visit the district classrooms and see for yourself! These same children will be in the classroom with him when he starts school anyway!

I think that it would be better if you integrate him into the public school system. Many students who go to a private school setting, are often not able to have the correct social skills to deal with the children who are not in private school. So when he is younger, it would be better to integrate him, as some of the students would likely be able to integrate him in earlier on in life. I hope that this helps you.

If the only problem your son has is a speech delay then he can only benefit from being with typically developing kids who can act as role models. The law requires that a child be served in the least restrictive environment that can meet his needs. Ask the school district why you were not offered the possibility of having a speech therapist work with him in his school, perhaps in the classroom part of the time and 1 on 1 part of the time. The school must, by law, allow this and it is at no expense to them or to you.
