Special needs qualifying for SSI?

My husband and I have four children. Three out of the four are considered special needs. My oldest has no health issues whatsoever, however my 2 1/2 year old son was diagnosed with Autism at 18 months by his pediatrician and by an actual specialist at 2years of age. I also have 10 month old Identical twins who suffered from Stage 4 TTTS in utero and now have several complications stemming from the TTTS. (Hydrocephalus, Grade 4 Bladder Reflux, developmental delays).

I was told recently that my son could qualify for some sort of disability due to his recent diagnosis but I'm quite sure where to start. We are a family of 6 with only one parent working, As I have therapy appointments 4 days a week with my younger 3 with Speech, Occupational and Behavioral as well as a therapist coming to our home for 3 hours a week.

Where exactly do I start? How will I know if I qualify? How much money is disbursed each month and how does that happen? Also, how long does it take to be accepted or denied?

Thank you

You are going to apply online. Then they will contact you for an appt.
http://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-apply-ussi.htm

I did not know that my sons would qualify. My middle son (autism/cerebral palsy) qualified immediately, and a letter was sent after 3 wks that he qualified. The MRI report from the neurologist that was very abnormal and missing a lot of white matter showing proof of a stroke probably helped. My 10 yr old I got a verbal that he would qualify on the phone automatically (IQ of 50 on multiple standardized tests (Stanford Binet and WISC-IV) administered privately and by public school after age 6) and his began 6wks after submission. My youngest I had the least amount of documentation, he did not need to be seen, and qualified after 4 months. The kids all get the same amount. They consider income, and child support. My kids receive 271.54/m. Most people will hear a result in 3-4 months but not after 6m. An early acceptance is kinda the automatics like 2 of mine.

It will be retro from 1 m after applying if a child gets approved. You do have to keep good records in case of an audit. Yearly you will report what the balance is and it can't exceed 2000.00. I do mine manually. Each child has a shoebox with all receipts and I write each month on an index card and staple each with a balance after each change like a checkbook. You have to keep the records for 2 yrs.

I did not have to send anything, only doctors names/addresses/fax numbers and releases, they gathered all the documentation from schools, doctors etc.

Use the internet ans search for the Social Security office which serves your town.
Contact them, they will send you forms.
Approval can take from 1 to 4 months.
If they seem to be stalling (My case worker was completely unresponsive, and repeatedly asked for copies of paperwork that she has signed for at delivery.) work with your state representative and senator, and your US representative and senator for help.

VERY IMPORTANT: anything you send them, have at least one copy of in your own records. Always send with delivery confirmation.

special needs range from mild to severe...only severe qualifies..

many people with autism will---some won't

prematurity sometimes qualifies for SSI

hydrocephalus is generally treatable and not a qualifier in of itself.....but complications of might be..
if a child is younger than 2 and was born premature--they use an adjusted age (based on actual 9 month due date) to determine developmental levels...

SSI is dependent on your income---1 person earning a large salary would disqualify you, where as 2 parents with low salaries might not...

the federal base amount is 674 (will go up by 3.6%)....i've heard conflicting info--some say a child only gets 2/3 of that as they 'live in a household of another' some say the child gets the full amount....some states have a supplement...it also comes with medicaid....

it can be hard to get SSI for a child with developmental issues when there is a possibility of significant improvement

if a child is OBVIOUSLY severely disabled or the condition is on this list, approval should be within 6 months--but it can also take years for others--because of people with adhd, learning disability, blind in one eye, mild physical disability, etc thinking they are entitled....SSA has to be extra careful because of so many frauds like that---and the high number of applications in general....
